Katy originally trained as a visual display artist, and in the early eighties began to paint in oils while being tutored by Heinz Boehnke. She then expanded into watercolours under the tutelage of Tony Lewis, a well known water-colourist in New Zealand and Australia.

Then followed a prolonged period away from painting, as family commitments took priority. However, the satisfaction of preparing successful entries for the Wearable Art Awards renewed her desire for creative expression, and the instinct and urge to paint persuaded her to again take up her brush.

She now lives in Nelson city and works from her studio overlooking Tahunanui Beach. Her paintings are in collections throughout New Zealand, as well as in Australia, Canada, the USA, England, Germany and Switzerland.
